The Mark I Habicht SLC introduced in 1988 was Swarovski’s first 8X30 roof prism binocular. It did not have phase coating and was not waterproof having no glass plates in front of its objective lenses. In 1990 an improved phase coated and waterproofed model, the Mark II Habicht SLC WB, came out to be replaced in 2003 by the Mark III with dielectric coated prisms and Swarobright anti-reflective coatings.
The feature to download torrents with Magnet Links was added in 2008, and similar updates like Teredo tunneling and Micro Transparent Protocol have been added. Protocol Encryption and Peer Exchange with other torrent clients are other important updates. Since its original release in 2005, the software has seen a number of added updates and features. As of 2018, a feature to allow uTorrent to be controlled by another person on another computer is currently in beta testing.
I acquired this Mark III by first purchasing a dilapidated Mark I (loose diopter, dusty inside, very brown/yellow image), sending it to Swarovski for warranty repair, and then accepting that company’s subsequent offer for an upgrade to this binocular for $400. I don’t mean to be overly harsh in describing this binocular because it is beyond a doubt a good one but I don’t think that by today’s standards it lives up to a discounted retail price of approximately $800 and definitely not its list price of $1,149. For that amount I would expect much better sharpness to the edge of field, a slightly brighter image and more comfortable eyecups for non-eyeglass wearers than this model has. Also, they are on the heavy side and, for me, not the most comfortable to hold and a little awkward and slow to focus. Possibly for some of these reasons, Swarovski has recently discontinued this model (many retailers continue to sell it) in favour of the lighter open bridge CL Companion model to be available July 2011.
Build quality of the binocular seems excellent and I will continue to use it quite a bit when I’m in the boat fishing or under wet conditions until I find something better. (I had purchased a Zen Ray ED2 7X36 for this purpose but it quickly became my wife’s favourite binocular. I thought she would prefer the Swarovski to the Zen Ray but to my surprise after a brief trial she unhesitatingly selected the Zen Ray.) Compared to other modern binoculars in collection I’d rate the Zen Ray ED 2 7X36 an overall somewhat better binocular and the Nikon SE 8X32 a much better one excepting the Nikon is not waterproof.
June 23/11 Update: I recently replaced this binocular's twist-in eyecups with the rubber-winged ones available from Swarovski, and for a non-eyeglass wearer, such as myself, this was a big improvement. The rubber-winged eyecups are simple to install, most comfortable to use and actually seem to improve the view.
